Lily’s Kitchen

Yawning Portal Buttermilk Biscuits
Lily experiments with all manner of distinctive cuisine, but finds herself coming back to human fare for comfort food. This mornings freshly made biscuits were made from a recipe that was halved, since she lives alone, she doesn’t make huge quantities. Maybe some abundance, she may deliver to the neighbors, her aunt, or her boss at the shop. These particular biscuits are salty not because the baker had to substitute baking soda for baking powder, and in the process refused to believe she needed to add less salt, overly salted the dough- oh, no! These are the biscuits of the Yawning Portal, and must sustain life for days. We all know life needs salt. The electrolytes are good for you. Just eat them. She tops her biscuit with steaming mushroom and bacon fat gravy, and an egg. This is her mother’s beloved gravy recipe. It has a lot of mushrooms and onion. She often makes a vegan version of this gravy recipe for her druid friends that come to visit. A few live on the philosophy: “Do not eat anything you can communicate with”. Very good rule… in theory.
She pairs her comfort food with curds of cheese, fresh tea, with nuts and berries from her garden.
Apothecary Shopping List
To replenish shop inventory… plus a little something for me.

Thistle
She is owner of the apothecary, The Obsidian Tooth, teacher, and friend. Thistles left shoulder joint never formed another arm, but sometimes, in the very corner of my eye, I see she has arms. She has many arms. She has the wisdom of a third eye. I don’t mind the extra scrutiny in the gaze… I just don’t like the hovering over me and I don’t love the muttering when I’m trying to work. For that reason, I rather run errands, or watch the shop alone. Except these days, I can’t even do that. I’ll be cornered. I better beat it and run some errands.

Taking Stock
These days more and more lurking is going on in this town. Tonight I’m making a list of security items that I may have around already. A bit of wood, a small crystal, agate- no problem. Why is that agate in the shape of genitalia? What can I say, there’s a lot of dicks around. A few of these items that I have read about are perplexing me, though. Tiny tarts? For what? I mean, I do like tarts… A jacinth? I may have to do some extra prep or go on the hunt for some of these.

Lily’s Kitchen
Lily grows food in her garden for sustenance and medicine. Foraging asparagus is a treat added to her healthy gut salad, topped with a boiled egg and radish flowers.

For dessert, she has a small cake made with foraged blueberries. Lily tops it with yogurt, nuts, and more berries. A small treat goes well with ginger and cinnamon tea.

Home Town of Mitla

Lily’s Favorite Haunts

Lily’s home is small but optimally located near the river, a main road, and not too far from aunt Mitsy. She passes her aunts house nearly every time she visits the shop. It’s just on days she rather not be seen, she goes the long way around. Sometimes on her way back home she goes straight south, near the tombs and shrines, to where to feral cats live. There’s an area she goes to leave food and water, she checks on the cats when she passes through. There’s been different food being left around lately. Someone else must be visiting. Going down the main road to Muerta she finds more of her favorites. The Tiny Tart is a bakery and pub that she and her guild members would frequent. The tarts are amazing, the ale is magnificent, and the hand pies are worth the trip. From there, walking north and east twords the fishing village, she has found a perfect foraging spot. Most who are out that way are by the river, so the partially wooded area is pretty quiet and free to forage in peace.

Warning & Request
A notice was left at my door today. It looks new and old at the same time. It’s absolutely cryptic. ‘Maitreya Arrange (Moon Chat Web)’. What does it mean? There’s been more mysteries recently: cryptic notes, missing cats, and strangers in the town. Do they have anything to do with each other?

The State of the Roses
The roses are nearly all blooming really well, a lot of beautiful flowers. Some of the roses are rusty. The have red-ish speckled spots on the leaves. Some yellowing leaves. Some leaves have these white squiggly lines that show some insect boring into the leaves. I cut the leaves and throw them away. I don’t leave them as compost since fungus can stick through winter. Some of them need pruning pretty badly. Mitsy would know how to attend to the roses.

The peppers are prolific, but short and stout. Hot peppers are ready for harvest soon. The spring peas and beans are nearly done. Yellow wax beans, black and white green beans, and sugar snap peas are all delicious. I picked all that were still on the vine, and I will be cutting down the vine shortly. I see the first cucumber and zucchini of the season and check out to see if I need to hand-pollinate the squash. Bolting radish give something for the pollinators to visit, and some really pretty, edible flowers that make a great garnish.

The Herbalist Guild Artwork
Aunt Mitsy is an incredible artist. Her artwork has influences new official seals and banners of the herbalist guild. Its not widely known, however, since she doesn’t like to draw very much attention to herself. To be accepted into the guild, you had to have a senior herbalist or alchemist vouch for you. Thistle was my established herbalist sponsor to support me and get me to continue my education. It was always understood that I would continue to work for her and use my new knowledge to help run the business.

I served under Thistle in apprenticeship as I took my classes, and soon earned full Herbalist Mark. I will be able to earn my Master Mark, but I think that I will have to make more study trips to El Tajin. The much bigger city is know for being more lively than Mitla, and an academic hub up north. There are some buildings on the university grounds that are known for their enthralling murals. I remember being drawn to those murals and thinking to myself I could just… stand there… all day… just looking… and still not be able to figure out the complexities of those murals.
